The Wall & All

March 28, 2009

Today we went to the Great Wall. We hired a driver for the day (I can give you a great recommendation if anyone is going to Beijing), his name is John and he made sure we got to everywhere we wanted and then some.

We started by going to the Badaling section of the Wall. This is the most popular part the wall, mainly because it has been rehabbed and it has a cable car to the top, which came in handy on the knees & saved us some precious time. I definitely want to go back when I have more time and go to a different section of the wall. I hear Simatai part of the wall is the most untouched and would love to go there sometime when I have a day to explore.

The Wall is amazing. I have seen pictures but you never realize how big it truly is and how much it snakes over the tops of the mountains and curls back up on itself. After the wall we went to the largest Jade Factory, watched them carve some Jade, shopped a little, and ate lunch. Thereafter we went to the Ming Tombs and saw Chang Ling's tomb & museum.

After the Tomb we rode back into Beijing and visited Olympic Village to see the now infamous Bird's Nest and Water Cube and then back to the hotel. Later we went on a walk to the Donghuamen Night Market to get some dinner. You can get some really good food there including fried scorpions and fried silk worms. I didn't try either of those but the rest of the food was really good.
