A ride with a view

January 12th, 2009

Today I started my first day at our HK office. It was uneventful - I met some of the people we will be working with and generally settled in to a new routine. I am once again working with my old supervisor so we talked & caught up for a good portion of the day while we worked. I learned that the workday over here is very regimented - everyone is in at 9am, takes lunch from 1pm-2:15pm and is finished at 5:45. I guess this is left over from the British system but it seems very relaxed throughout the day just because we are expected to take our lunch and there is no guilt about doing so.

For lunch we went to this litte Japanese place - the food was quite good, but they were out of anything that noted Spicy on the menu. I guess they ran out of Spicyness which seems odd given it is on most of the menu. I hear they make an incredible sizzeling tofu - but they were out of the stuff for that to.

Afterwork I went with Debbi Prentis, one of my co-workers from Chicago, to take the tram up to the peak. The tram ride was fun - and not like the tram in ABQ - it is not a cable car, more of a train. The view from the peak was incredible and really lets you know how large HK Island is and then you look over to Kowloon and realize how much larger Hong Kong is. The lights were absolutely beautiful from there and I look forward to hiking up the peak frequently. We ate at the top of the peak with Beth & her mom and then took a cab down this long winding road back to about where our office was. I didn't have my camera since we left straight from work but I hope to get pictures from Debbi - if not I plan on returning so I will take my own.
