Monkey Business

March 15, 2009

Today I went on a 13-K hike around Shing Mun Reservoir & over to Tai Po. Shing Mun Reservoir is the largest water storage facility at the foot of Tai Mo Shan Mountain just outside of Tseun Wan. You can only imagine my excitement when it was another DIRT trail. In addition I met an amazing Professor that is over here teachign cross-cultural communications and will be returning to Notre Dame to teach this fall.

After the hike around the reservoir and before heading up the pass towards the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve and ultimately Tai Po Market we stopped to eat lunch in a clearing that was filled with wild monkeys and a lone cow. The monkeys were everywhere and would follow you if you had food or a plastic bag (which they associate with food). They would also dive into the trash can reminding me of the good ole' LF squirrels.

After lunch I hiked up into the pass and down into Tai Po.

Some of us with the cow.

At the midway point to Tai Po - almost at the top of the pass.

* A kind warning/word to the wise - Monkeys can be very vicious and will attack humans (even small children) for food. Be careful & watch your kids if you hike around Monkeys.
